Having grown up in the house, this San Rafael, California, homeowner has been ready for a new look — such as a radically different kitchen. After gutting the area, interior designer Alison Davin of Jute Interior Design put in timeless Shaker cabinetry and stainless steel appliances, accessorizing just with a daring and bright backsplash. An open layout visually expands the 12- from 12-foot space.

With three brothers at the house, it made sense that the customers wanted an indestructible — but beautiful — kitchen. Custom Shaker-style cabinetry, dark walnut flooring and Caesarstone countertops fit the bill.
A swing door leads to and out of their kitchen. Davin installed floor-to-ceiling cabinetry into the left of the doorway for the household’s pantry.

Inspired by white cabinetry and countertops, the brilliant backsplash is the kitchen’s instant focus. The customers wanted a glass backsplash and some fun fun. Davin worked together to locate a textile they loved, and used that as inspiration.
Working with Ann Sacks, Davin custom designed the size, pattern and color palette of the glass tiles.

The customers also had a banquette on their kitchen wish list. The comfy seating area allows their women to have friends over and snack in the kitchen.

The banquette was built round the desk, which the customers had custom made and loved. Davin had the exterior wall bumped out a bit so the banquette could fit into the kitchen’s open layout.
Storage built into the banquette seating holds table linens and place settings.
