Street Smart: Launched Bohemian-Style Curtains

These stunning drapes slide across a large bay window in my Brooklyn yoga studio, Kula Williamsburg. I really like the mix of the rich velvet curtains with the sheer, gauzy overlay. So I set out to create a similar appearance with my bedroom loft windows. HereI share my inspiration and a peek at the way my bedroom drapes turned out.

There’s a bohemian vintage style to these drapes at my yoga studio, Kula Williamsburg. The gauzy coating balances the drama of this dark velvet.

The velvet and gauzy drapes are clipped into a track and slide open and closed. The drapes even seem pretty drawn open, once the gauzy overlay reminds me with a pleated vintage dress.

The Kula Williamsburg studio supervisor chose drapes in a span that puddle into the ground, which adds to the unfussy bohemian style of this space.

Here’s a glance in my bedroom drapes.

The windows in our attic are super large, so I could not discover readymade drapes in the ideal length. I scouted a blue-gray velvet from the garment district in Manhattan.

Then I had a pocket sewn in the top (to match over my curtain rod ) and hems sewn along the borders.

I commissioned designer Nadia Yaron of Nightwood to create the gauzy overlay. She found the perfect cloth with that vintage, gauzy appearance.

We abandon the bare seams of this gauzy cloth so that it frays a bit — and adds into the bohemian style. Nadia is a master in working with gauzy textiles (you may remember that bedroom she made for a Design*Sponge editor).
